Sedation dentistry is exactly what it sounds like; we ensure you are sedated for your appointment. When you come to see us, we’ll discuss the options for sedation dentistry so you can have a great experience. We can provide sedation dentistry for several procedures, from root canals to regular cleaning. We’re happy to discuss your options and work with you to help lessen your anxiety around a dental visit.
Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?
Sedation dentistry can be a great option for patients who experience dental anxiety, fear of pain, sensitive teeth, or discomfort during dental visits. At Tooth Crew Dental, our compassionate team works closely with patients to create a calm and supportive experience designed around comfort and relaxation.
Before recommending sedation, we carefully review factors such as your overall health, medical history, age, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and the type of procedure being performed. Our goal is to ensure sedation dentistry is both safe and suitable for your individual needs while helping you feel more comfortable throughout your appointment.
How Sedation Dentistry Works
When you arrive for your appointment, our team will explain the treatment process and answer any questions you may have. We offer several sedation options, including IV sedation, oral sedation, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas), depending on your comfort level and treatment requirements.
Sedation helps patients feel deeply relaxed during treatment while remaining responsive and monitored throughout the procedure. Many patients remember very little about their visit afterward, helping reduce fear and anxiety associated with future dental appointments. For safety reasons, patients receiving sedation should arrange transportation to and from the office and plan to rest after their procedure
FAQ's
Have you got a question? We have an answer!
How long the sedation lasts depends on what type of sedation we administer. With oral sedation, it can last between 2 to 8 hours. IV sedation can last for at least 12 hours, and laughing gas will only last as long as the gas is administered. We recommend not operating vehicles, dangerous equipment, or heavy machinery for at least 24 hours for any sedation. With IV and oral sedation, it’s best to let it fully filter from your system before going about your routine.
Regarding the side effects of sedation, the typical side effects you will experience are drowsiness, dry mouth, headaches, nausea or vomiting. If you choose IV sedation, there can be bruising at the injection site. Memory loss is a very common side effect of any form of sedation. We recommend having someone with you after the procedure to monitor you in case of any other side effects or an allergic reaction.
Oral sedation will typically begin to work within half an hour. Laughing gas will kick in within a few minutes, and IV sedation will start working 15 to 30 minutes after administering it. These times can vary depending on the patient, and we abide by a 2–3-hour window to complete the work. As soon as sedation is administered, it begins wearing off, so we ensure all work needed is done within that time frame. If you need more time, we’ll book you in for another appointment.
Typically yes, dental sedation is very safe. However, we will ensure it is the correct choice for you before administering any sedative. We will discuss underlying conditions and go over your history. We won’t do it if we feel unsafe for you. We will monitor you throughout the appointment to ensure nothing happens, and if something does, we can intervene immediately.
