🦷 Figuring out your Dental Insurance – What You Need to Know

Dentist appointment can be scary with a lot of unknowns. To add to the anxiety, Dental insurance can feel complicated, but knowing your benefits helps you plan your care, avoid unexpected costs, and make the most of your coverage. At Toothcrew Family Dental, we want our patients to feel confident when it comes to their dental plan.

👉 Why You Should Know Your Dental Benefits

  • Coverage amounts and limits vary from plan to plan.

  • Many plans reset annually (often January 1st). If you don’t use your benefits, you lose them.

  • Understanding your coverage helps you avoid surprises and plan larger treatments in advance.

👉 Basic vs. Major Treatments

  • Basic Services: Exams, X-rays, cleanings, fillings, and simple extractions. These are often covered at a higher percentage (70–100%).

  • Major Services: Crowns, bridges, dentures, implants, root canals, and orthodontics. These may have lower coverage (40–60%) or annual maximum limits.

👉 Predetermination Process
For major procedures, we can submit a treatment plan to your insurance company before starting. This confirms how much will be covered, so you’ll know your exact portion in advance.

👉 Checking Your Benefits
Most insurance providers have an online portal or mobile app where you can:

  • Check remaining coverage for the year

  • See if you’ve reached your annual maximum

  • Find out when your benefits reset

  • Review what procedures are included under your plan

👉 Maximizing Your Benefits Before Year-End

  • Schedule appointments before your benefits reset so you don’t lose unused coverage.

  • Split larger treatments across two benefit years if needed.

  • If your plan doesn’t cover the full cost, you may be able to submit the remaining portion through a Health Spending Account (HSA) or claim it as a medical expense on your Canadian tax return.

⚠️ Important Reminder: Every insurance policy is different. Coverage percentages, maximums, and eligibility for certain treatments vary by plan and provider. Insurance companies can also change policies without notice. Please review your plan details or check with your insurer directly.
