What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is essentially a cover for your tooth. When your tooth is damaged or broken or has a root canal or large filling, a crown is placed over it to prevent further damage and restore your teeth. It helps with things like chewing and speaking without pain and allows your tooth to heal.
A crown can be made of metal, composite, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. What type of crown you will get depends on what teeth you need. Our dentists will walk you through the process of getting a crown and what material crown will best suit your needs.
Do I need a Crown?
There are several reasons a crown can be needed. A dentist will recommend a crown if you have damaged teeth. Damage can occur in several ways, i.e. instances like cracked, broken or chipped teeth.
If you’ve had a root canal or fillings, a dentist will recommend a crown to protect the area or the rest of the tooth. A crown will also be recommended if you have a dental bridge or to cover an implant. Crowns can also be used to cover severely stained teeth.

How is a crown placed?
Placing a crown starts with knowing what teeth need them. When you come in for crowns, we’ll begin by looking at your teeth. You may need one or several crowns, so we want to be sure. Once we’ve identified those teeth, we’ll get to work.
First, we’ll administer a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Once you’re numb, we’ll begin filing down the tooth. Filing down the teeth makes fitting the crown much easier.
After filing, we’ll take a mould of that tooth and its surrounding teeth. We want to ensure it is a perfect fit so you’ll be comfortable. Once we’ve taken a mould, we’ll create a custom crown for you. For the time being, you’ll be given a temporary crown based on the mould of your tooth before we file it down.
We’ll bring you back when the final crown has been finished. We’ll remove the temporary crown and fit you with the last version. Once you’re satisfied with the fit, we’ll bond the crown to the tooth or teeth, and you’re good to go.
